A metropolis rising out of the prairies, Winnipeg has a tendency to surprise anyone who comes across it – even when they head there on purpose! If you’re here for business or pleasure, you’re in for a treat.
A night out in Winnipeg could easy include a comedy club, art show, dinner, a sports game, or clubbing until the wee hours, but if you just want to settle yourself on a barstool and sip and few well-mixed drinks, then there are plenty of spots – from trendy lounges to lively taverns – to choose from. Here are a few of our top picks:
For Craft Beer
Barley Brothers (2 locations: one by the stadium and one by polo park) is a relatively new addition to the Winnipeg bar scene, but it’s already making waves with over 72 craft beers on tap. The organic lager is a great choice if you’re thirsty, or if you’re looking for a quick bite, go for the wonderfully original beer and cheese soup!
For live music
A well-established and unfailingly popular pub in hip Osborne Village, Toad in the Hole has everything a good pub should. There’s a good selection of imported beers, a full menu of satisfying pub grub, including several traditional British dishes, and even live music on occasion. Downstairs is the Cavern, the Toad’s dedicated music venue, where you can catch all sorts of fun local bands.
For great cocktails
It may seem an unlikely combination, but the fact that G Martini Bar is attached to Meiji Sushi Bar actually works like a charm. Tuck yourself under a traditional tatami table, tuck into a bento box-style lunch, and wash it all down with something strong from the huge list of Martinis. YOu can sit upstairs in the martini bar or downstairs in the restaurant lounge for a more chill vibe.
For Sports Games
If the Winnipeg jets games are playing, you should pull up a bar stool at The Yellow Dog, a comfortable, well-worn place that isn’t trying to be anything but a decent bar to meet with friends or watch the game. Its location at Donald and Notre Dame makes it suitable for starting or ending off your night somewhere in the Exchange. The old building still has the historic pressed ceiling and original wood floors, though you might not notice that as you tuck into a tasty bison burger or pulled pork sandwich!
Good food, good beer, and good people – who could ask for more? Well, in Winnipeg, they give you more anyway. Live music, classy decor, and a great selection are just a few of the things that will add up to your perfect night out on the Prairies!
