If you’re staying in one of our awesome apartments in New York City, then we already know you’re the kind of person who loves great travel experiences that don’t break the bank. So we’ve put together a little list of some ‘Big Apple Classics’ – spots where you can chow down and still have cash left over for sights and shopping. So dig in!
Opened in 1888, Katz’s is a true New York City institution, and the best place to try pickles, knockwurst, salami, frankfurters, potato salad and all manner of juicy pastrami and beef brisket sandwiches. This restaurant is famous for that scene with Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in ‘When Harry Met Sally’, and four US Presidents including Bill Clinton have visited the place. Which goes to show, if the food is good, they will come.
Archie & Sons
Archie & Sons is a vintage-style restaurant that serves simple fresh salads, sandwiches and soups at excellent prices, in an old New York type atmosphere. Their tuna melt (tuna and cheese on toasted rye) is the best in the city, and you also can’t go wrong with split pea soups, BLTs, and their signature macaroni, potato, and coleslaw salad.
A cult favourite with hot dog fans (ok, and pretty much everyone else by now) this Shake Shack started as a hot dog cart, and is now a national franchise that serves classic hot dogs along with a fabulous selection of gourmet burgers and shakes. And if you want to know what happened to the cart? It’s now a busy hot dog booth with garden tables right next to the Flatiron building in Manhattan. The DogMeister (a hot dog) topped with cheddar, American cheese and shallots is a popular order and the SmokeShack burger (a cheeseburger) topped with smoked bacon, cherry pepper and a tangy house sauce has its own dedicated fan base!
If you’re looking for a quick bite and love Mexican food, you’ll die for Dos Toros Taqueria’s grilled chicken! All their burritos, tacos and quesadillas are made from super-fresh ingredients, the service is friendly, and the surroundings are funky with informal bar-stool-style seating at tables made from reclaimed wood.
If simple and small is your thing, visit Marlow & Sons, a cozy restaurant with warm wood-panels and communal tables. Their menu is seasonal and inspired by local flavour. You’ll love the small-plate appetizers (cheeses, charcuterie, oysters etc) and their great daily specials such as wild leek and goat cheese tart. If you have a bigger appetite, try the Brick Chicken – one of the main course dishes that’s cooked pizza-style in the restaurant’s brick oven. YUM!
