We don’t blame you if Halifax isn’t the first place that comes to mind when you’re listing foodie meccas. But if you find yourself in this part of the world, we’re pretty confident you won’t go home disappointed. Halifax’s restaurant scene has been on the up-and-up for a while now, and Nova Scotia’s capital is ready to compete with its food-famous sister cities farther south. Here are just a few of our favourites – let us know if you’ve got a great addition for our list!

Halifax Restaurants

Brooklyn Warehouse

Especially loved locally for their huge, fresh oysters, Brooklyn warehouse has been featured at the top of “Best Halifax Restaurants” lists for a while now, and it’s easy to see why. In warmer months you can grab a seat on the patio and tuck into eclectic dishes like pork belly risotto and coconut curry butternut squash soup, as well as organic local means cheeses and seafood. Insider tip: order one of their incredible Ceaser cocktails.

Cut Steakhouse

This is a great choice for a special occasion (it’s a little on the pricy side) or for when you really need a mean slab of ribeye. Ask for a table with a view of the ocean, and gaze at the aging meat on display as you await your meal. Oh, and if the lobster poutine is on the menu when you’re there, do not miss it.

Morris East

The perfect choice if you like Italian food done right. Morris East has the best wood-fired pizzas in town, but our favourite menu item has to be the caramel tart dessert. Just try it. The intimate, cozy atmosphere makes for the perfect no-pressure date, but get there early, as they don’t take recommendations.

Halifax Restaurants

The Wooden Monkey

They bill themselves as a “restaurant with a conscience” so you can feel good about eating here, whether you’re a locavore, vegetarian, vegan  or raw foodist (oh, and the entire menu is gluten-free). Casual, rustic decor makes this a great place for a laid-back meal – think gastropub – and you shouldn’t leave without trying one of the innovative desserts, we love the chocolate tofu pie.

Chives Canadian Bistro

If you’re looking for great food at great prices, this is the spot for you. Many locals think this is one of the best Halifax restaurants. The menu features lots of local ingredients and local wines, as well as super fresh seafood and top-quality steak. The warm, homemade biscuits are almost famous, and go for the Duck-Duck-Goose appetizer for a delicious way to start your meal. Reservations recommended.
